On April 23, Prime Minister George Papandreou announced, from the island of Kastelorizo, the recourse of
Greece to the support mechanism of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
A 10% -30% luxury
tax was imposed
on new cars with a factory price higher than 17,000 euros
and on imported used cars with a factory price higher than 12,000 euros. As a countermeasure, at the end of the following year, the circulation of diesel engine cars was permitted in Athens and Thessaloniki.
