The construction of Egnatia Odos started in 1994. That year, 24 km were handed over, a section shared with A1, the National Athens- Thessaloniki-Evzoni Motorway. By 2003, 355 km were open to traffic. In 2009, the main body of the Egnatia Motorway was completed and on May 10, 2014 the entire project was handed over to circulation. Egnatia receives traffic from 4 ports and 6 airports, has 177 large bridges of a total 42 km in length and 73 tunnels of a total 50 km
in length. The areas it goes through and connects are home to 36% of the country's population and produce 33% of the total GDP.
