The concept of car
recycling was adopted
in our country. In 2004,
the Alternative Vehicle Management of Greece (E.D.O.E.) was founded
and the scrapping method was essentially abolished.
In February 2003, national distributors-companies, members of the Hellenic Association of Motor
Vehicle Importers Representatives –
Nic. J. Theocarakis S.A.
is a member since
January 1965 - submitted
a dossier-proposal to the competent department of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning on
the establishment of an Alternative End-of-Life Vehicle Management System. This proposal followed Directive 2005/53/EC, which required Member States to legislate the recycling of old vehicles, at the responsibility of manufacturers or
national distributors. The outcome of this initiative was the establishment of E.D.O.E., a collective non- profit organization. Until the beginning of 2008, E.D.O.E. had approved the operation of 39 scrap yards throughout Greece, while 1,077 vehicles were recycled in 2004, 6,551 in 2005, 30,570 in 2006 and 50,534 in 2007.
