1920-1930
A car circulation tax was imposed
for the first time, amounting to 1,500 drachmas for passenger cars. Two years later an additional fee and a special fee were introduced, which increased in 1930, and a “Presumed income of car owners” was established.
1923
The first fuel pump in the country appears to have been installed at the Mariolis-Bouras dealership, on Panepistimiou Street.
1927
There were 42 taxicab stands in Athens. The first one was at Dorou Street,
in the Hafteia neighbourhood.
1928
ELPA installed “elegant traffic lights” at Korai Street to regulate traffic.
1928
There is a reference of 20,000 cars circulating in Athens; while licensed drivers were only 8,900 (85 of them were women). In 1930, there were 12,076
(134 were women) drivers.
1930
In the late 1920s, matters concerning car traffic were regulated, an indication of car proliferation. The first important legislation was Law 484/277-1930 “On cars, their circulation and drivers’ obligations”, which was put into effect during the ministership of Dimitrios Digas and Nikolaos Avraam (Minister of Transport).
