From 1954 to 1961 the car park increased by 175%.
In 1961, 74% of the total number of cars in the country were concentrated in the capital (31,082 cars), more specifically, the ratio was
168 cars per 1,000 residents, whereas the equivalent
in the country was 50 per 1,000. Giannis Maris, journalist and novelist,
in his second book Murder Backstage (1954), compared Athens to New York, as regards the traffic load. The photo, featuring the then
2 way street, Panepistimou Avenue and Omonia square in the background, proves
Maris’ statement.
