Since the mid-1950s, urban centres had been expanding, especially the Athens-Piraeus Urban Agglomeration. Between 1951 and 1961, the population of Athens,
for instance, increased from 1,378,000 to 1,852,709 residents, according to the General Census.
In the suburbs, the population grew from 155,323 residents in 1951 to 251,680 ten years later. According to the 1961 census, only 1 in 4 residents that lived in the agglomeration was born there. Various areas on the outskirts of the capital, which used to be holiday destinations, were beginning
to transform into suburbs.
